COLLINGWOOD HISTORY

Before the 1900’s Collingwood had a small amount of residents, but as time passed the population grew along with the community. George Wales was the first non-native settler who in 1878 bought 221 acres of land where he made his home. Today that same street still holds his family name. After the interurban line was built in 1891, more people began to move to the area. In 1896 a two-room school, that accommodated 30 students, was built and is today the oldest school in Vancouver. This school gave the community great pride and many of the streets names were named after some of the first students to attend the school. This school is currently known as Sir Guy Carleton.
